We know hand sanitizer is hard to come by these days, and there are lots of home remedies floating around the internet. Everyone's sister's, neighbor's, uncle's friend has a surefire recipe that will work just as good or better than the stuff at the store. Except it won't.
The newest recipe floating around is directing people to head to the liquor store, grab some vodka, and make their own. The problem, says one prominent vodka maker, is that the alcohol proof is not high enough to actually kill the germs that hand sanitizers target. According to the CDC, hand sanitizer needs to contain at least 60% alcohol (click here for more detailed info). Most vodka found in your local liquor store is 40% alcohol, and therefore does not meet the current recommendation of the CDC. Before you go running for higher proof liquors as a substitute ingredient in your DIY hand sanitizer, keep reading. Scientists aren't wild about DIY hand sanitizers containing any liquor store products. You see, most of us aren't chemists and aren't running a sterile lab at home. This means potential for a contaminated liquor store hand sanitizer to be made, in the wrong proportions or with non-sterile tools. At the end of the day, one of the best ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is to wash your hands frequently, using soap and water, for at least 20 seconds each time you do it. Stay safe, stay smart, stay home. | |
